Overview
Turmeric – A herb with a phenomenal medical profile
In the beginning, it was long used as a coloring agent until the health benefits of turmeric came to light. Its medicinal properties come from compounds known as ‘curcumin’ which is the main active ingredient in turmeric.
It has very strong anti-inflammatory & anti-oxidant effects. Although it is present only 5% by weight in turmeric, however, this is a very potent compound.
Almost all the health benefits of turmeric are attributed to curcuminoids (especially curcumin) which are the compounds responsible for their therapeutic benefits to humans.
Turmeric approximately contains 2% – 8% curcuminoids by weight and curcumin is the most active component of curcuminoids, constituting about 75% of its total weight.
It is used in culinary, as a dye, and in religious ceremonies. Apart from that, considering its wide spectrum of medicinal profile determining the health benefits of turmeric, nutritionists are not shying away from calling it a ‘mystic herb’ now.
There are a lot of curcumin-based supplements in the market that have added natural compounds to add further health benefits to this already potent compound.
